The walls talk

One evening the power went out in our stairwell. My mother worried about the food in the freezer and, sure that I was asleep, went out for ten minutes to take it to my grandmother in the next stairwell. The front door must have woken me, and I knew at once that I was home alone. For some reason I felt I had to get out.
